Piazza Walther

This is the nerve center of the city and is an obligatory stop for tourists, being the best place to start a trip around the old town. The square is closed to all traffic except buses and takes its name from the white marble monument (1889) in its center, this monument is dedicated to the medieval German poet Walther von der Vogelweide. Piazza Walther is also known as the city's 'drawing room' and is surrounded by all sorts of buildings and two of the best hotels in the city, the Greif and the Città. During the summer, the bars and cafes put tables and chairs outside. It is a lovely place to sit and watch the world go by. The Duomo is located just a few meters from the square and is the most important Gothic construction in the region. The bell tower is 65 meters tall and was built in the 16th century, while the cathedral itself, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta, was begun in 1295 and completed at the beginning of the 16th Century.

Museion

The museum was founded in 1985 by a private organization in collaboration with the Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano. The museum makes every effort to make use of its location between the Italian and German cultural and linguistic areas. In 1991, the museum changed its name to Museion to highlight the fact that it is also involved with other forms of contemporary art apart from art collections and exhibitions. The museum has two floors, the ground floor (used for temporary exhibitions, offices, and library) and the basement (storage and workshops) inside the building, which was constructed in 1860 and used as a hospital for many years.

Messner Mountain Museum

Located at Castle Sigmundskron, Messner Mountain Museum is neither intended as a mountaineering museum nor a museum featuring South Tyrol's mountains. It is, rather intended to show what effect a mountain has on people with respect to its enormity, natural habitat, and general influence on the common man. At Sigmundskron, visitors are guided on a tour explaining the history of the mountains based on pictures, sculptures, symbolic objects and mementos collected the world over on numerous expeditions. The white tower consisting of several floors is dedicated to the history of South Tyrol.

Sigmundskron Castle

Sigmundskron Castle is located five kilometers (three miles) outside Bolzano, on a porphyritic crag rising above Adige. This spot was inhabited back in antiquity (late Mesolithic - 4th millennium BCE). In fact various archaeological finds have been made here, including worked flints and fragments of pottery. "Formigar" was the original name of this imposing castle, a fortress belonging to the bishops of Trent, which at the time consisted of a few buildings on top of the hill. The bishops of Trent were the feudal princes of Trent, Bolzano and Venosta from 1027 CE onward. Duke Sigismondo il Danarosa bought the castle during the second half of the 15th Century in order to enlarge it and turn it into one of his largest castles. Over the next few centuries the castle passed from hand to hand, it then became uninhabited and fell into ruin. It was bought by the Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano in the 1990s. It is also known as Castel Firmiano. Today, it is the base of the Messner Mountain Museum.

Castel Roncolo

Standing tall by the river that gently courses through Bolzano, the Castel Roncolo, or Schloss Runkelstein, has been in existence since 1237. It also houses interesting exhibitions of frescoes within its premises touted to be one of a kind. It also offers tours of the premises, so a visit here is a must for every traveler.

Chiesa dei Francescani

This Franciscan church and monastery were first built in the 13th Century, but were later rebuilt and enlarged in the Gothic style at the beginning of the 14th Century. The square bell tower, rebuilt in 1376, was constructed according to the designs for the original bell tower of the cathedral. The church's Neo-Gothic facade dates back to the second half of the 19th Century. In the background of the luminous choir with modern glass-work by Windmoser, is the wooden casket altar engraved by Hans Klocker in 1500 - it is one of the most important Gothic works of art conserved in Bolzano's churches. On the left side of the church you can enter the cloisters with their three-lobed arches. The cloisters were built at the beginning of the 14th century and are decorated with a precious cycle of frescoes by Giotto's school (1330-40). The portico in front of the church was added after World War II, following the enormous amount of damage caused by the bombs.
