Pechersky Ascension Monastery

Seat of the Bishop of Arzamas and Nizhny Novgorod, Pechersky Ascension Monastery is the main monastery of the diocese of Nizny Novgorod. St. Dionysius, who established the monastery in the 14th Century, arrived here from the Kiev Monastery of the Caves with other members of the monastery. The monastery building is enveloped by a red wall and towers which makes it appear like a small fort. Presently, the monastery is home to a book shop and an archaeology museum.
