Refugio 307

Refugio 307 is a historic air raid shelter that was built during the Spanish Civil War. Tucked away in the Poble Sec neighborhood, the shelter is part of the Museum of History of Barcelona (MUHBA). Made up of 200 meters (656 feet) of tunnels, the shelter was dug and built by older men, women and children since most of the abled-bodied men were off fighting on the front lines. Holding up to 2,000 people, the shelter was made of clay to help absorb the shocks from possible gunfire, and a lime coating on the interior to prevent humidity. Visitors can take a tour of this historic Spanish landmark on Sundays with group tours offered throughout the week.

Funeral Carriage Collection at the Montjuïc Cemetery

Death is inevitable and each culture and each region, has its own way and ritual to mourn death. At the Colección de Carrozas Fúnebres, visitors can see a collection of funeral vehicles. Being located in the basement, adds a creepy effect to the ambiance. Carriages, automobiles and engraved tombstones complete the collection. The mannequins and horses give it a realistic touch.

Alexander CalderMercury Fountain

Pumping mercury instead of water, this shiny fountain is truly a sight to behold. Created by American artist, the complex installation is far from the traditional fountain designs, with the mercury flowing across numerous surfaces before reaching the shimmering pool of liquid metal. Housed in a glass-enclosed cabin at the Fundació Joan Miró, the fountain is a tribute to Almaden, a town which was historically, a major center for mercury mining.
