The name is deceptive - the view from the Alpenblick isn't of the Alps, but rather of a busy street in Kleinbasel, where clients can enjoy a refreshing beer. The interior comprises a mix of baroque-style furniture from different eras and most people that come here are quite young. Many of them are students, musicians and people that live nearby. The Alpenblick also hosts cultural events such as literary readings and live music with the focus being on unknown artists. If you are hungry, you can go to Valentinos around the corner. Burgers and other snacks are served here until the early hours.
Don't be fooled into thinking that the Campari Bar only serves campari. During the day you can also buy cakes, coffee, panini or any of the dishes on the menu of the Kunsthalle's restaurant next door. The bar itself has been divided into two separate areas and locals meet up here for a chat before or after visiting the cinema or the theater. The back of the bar is cozy, with lots of plush armchairs but the drinks are quite pricey. Either way, the view from here is always a treat and in the summer everyone eats and drinks outside in what may well be Basel's most beautiful garden.
If you want to visit the Luftschloss in the evening, you will have to make a reservation or face disappointment. Although it is also a restaurant, it is the selection of wine which is the real attraction here. There are over 60 types of wines, many of which are available to "take out." They come from all over the world, and all can be recommended. The menu is limited, but prepared and served with love. The wonderful ambiance completes the pleasure.
