Although some of downtown Calgary's office towers are actually taller, the Calgary Tower remains the city's most distinctive landmark. Officially opened in 1968, it remains a popular visitor attraction, providing a panoramic view of the mountains to the west and the surrounding foothills and prairie. On the observation deck, there are binoculars, multimedia information kiosks, and the thrilling Glass Floor Experience. The dining room rotates, allowing visitors the chance to relax with a meal while viewing the entire city from their window-side tables at the Panorama Dining Room.
One of the two theaters located within Vertigo Theatre, the Playhouse Theatre is a proscenium theater whose audience faces the stage directly, with the seats having a progressive elevation starting from the front row. With a seating capacity of 351, this space has witnessed some of the finest performances in Calgary. In typical old world style, a grand red curtain still rolls up before the start of any show. The interiors are modernistic with deep blue seats that are accentuated by a dark brown glossy wood floor. Check the website for upcoming events.
It must be great to be a projectionist at this Downtown movie house. Instead of changing the reels on Hollywood's latest high school prom flick, you get to handle the kind of films first seen at festivals, or overseas in foreign languages. This multiple screen cinema typically shows critically acclaimed films from around the world, with the occasional French fare thrown in so as not to seem too pretentious. The Globe is for those who like to think over their popcorn. It can even be rented out for private events. Call for timings.
Head to the Kinkonautson 9th Avenue and if you wish to get a taste of Calgary's fun-filled theater scene. The theater group consists of a roster of some of the city's most talented and quick-witted artists who collectively put on a show to savor for their audiences. They also offer classes in comedy, direction, and leadership on its premises.
