Kuala Lumpur, the dynamic capital of Malaysia, is a modern metropolis showcasing diverse cultures and towering skyscrapers. Feel the vibrant energy while exploring its bustling markets, lush parks, or dynamic art and entertainment scene. While iconic landmarks like the Petronas Twin Towers are a sign of the city's ambition and innovation, historic neighborhoods like Chinatown and Little India offer a vibrant glimpse into the city's multicultural soul. Here are our top picks for to explore the dazzling capital of Malaysia.

Menara Kuala Lumpur

Adorning the summit of Kuala Lumpur's Pineapple Hill, the Menara Kuala Lumpur rises phenomenally over the city's landscape. This needle-like telecommunications tower measures 421 metres (1,381 feet), offering visitors extraordinary views of the city from its spacious sky deck, which can also be enjoyed from the on-site revolving restaurant. Besides offering avenues for recreation, it also brilliantly operates as a lunar observatory, allowing devout Muslims to observe the moon throughout the holy month of Ramadan. Declared open to the public since 1996 when it finished construction, the Kuala Lumpur Tower was also misunderstood as the city's tallest building, because of its perch atop a hill. It is recognized, however, as the 7th tallest self-supporting tower in the world.

2 Jalan Puncak, Off Jalan P. Ramlee, Kuala Lumpur, Maleisië, 50250
Asian Heritage Row

Asian Heritage Row is a long row of refurbished buildings that house a wide variety of cuisine. Locals and tourists alike head to the Asian Heritage Row for entertainment and dining. For Malaccan Portuguese head to Kristao Restaurant and Bar or for a snack the Bisou Bake Shop can't be beat. The Asian Heritage Row contains various nightclubs, including the Loft KL and the Rupee Room.

54 Jalan Doraisamy, Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur, Maleisië, 50300
Central Market

This Kuala Lumpur institution in its present form has been around since 1937. Central Market is a treasure trove of handmade items, souvenirs, custom-made crafts and art. At this wonderful shopping center/market, you'll find various stalls and small shops offering unique wares. Batik textiles can be found throughout and make for a great souvenir. A nearby theater puts on traditional wayang kulit (shadow puppet shows).

Jalan Hang Kasturi, Lot 3.04-3.06, City Centre, Kuala Lumpur, Maleisië, 50050
Istana Negara

An outstanding architectural masterpiece embedded on the city's horizon, the Istana Negara Palace is one of the most emblematic landmarks of the city. Established in 2011 replacing the old Istana Negara (which is now an elaborate museum), this regal edifice bears an ornate amalgam of Islamic, Malay and Western architectural styles. Ornamented with rolling, verdant lawns, the palace served as the official abode of Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah, the then monarch of Malaysia. The palace is guarded by sturdy, wrought-iron gates, its insides complete with a tapestry of sharp arches, opulent rooms, and artifacts chronicling the majesty and legacy of the monarch. Crowned by more than 20 gleaming golden domes, the palace is, indubitably, the crowned jewel of Kuala Lumpur.

Jalan Tuanku Abdul Halim, Bukit Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, Maleisië, 50480
National Museum (Muzium Negara)

After gaining its independence in August of 1957, the Federation of Malaya, the Malaysian federal government, decided to build the museum on the site of the old Selangor Museum. Construction began in 1959 and the doors opened in August of 1963. It is a place that houses and recounts Malaysia's rich cultural and historical heritage.

Jalan Damansara, Jabatan Muzium Malaysia, Perdana Botanical Gardens, Kuala Lumpur, Maleisië, 50566
Merdeka Square

The Merdeka Square (Dataran Merdeka) was once a focal point and cricket pitch for the British colonial present in Malaysia. The structures bordering the Dataran Merdeka resemble the physical environment of the colonists' native land. Situated on one corner of the square is the Selangor Club, replicating the Tudors of merry old England. It was at this square in 1957 that the Union Jack was lowered and the Malayan flag hoisted, signaling Malaysia's independence as a nation. A 95-meter (311.68-feet) flagpole, one of the tallest in the world, marks the spot.

Jalan Raja, Wilayah Persekutuan, Kuala Lumpur, Maleisië, 50050
Batu Caves

The Batu Caves are one of the holiest Hindu shrines in Malaysia. The Caves are popular not only for being the southernmost limestone outcrop in the Northern Hemisphere, but the labyrinth that makes up the Batu Caves also supports a variety of native wildlife. There is a 272-step concrete staircase leading to the temple cave. The main cave holds a shrine of Lord Subramaniam, a Hindu deity. A cave gallery is located at the foot of the caves featuring clay figurines and wall paintings depicting scenes and figures from Hindu mythology. During the festival of Thaipusam dedicated to Lord Murugan and celebrated on a full moon night, the caves are flooded with worshippers paying their respects in their festive best.

Jalan Batu Caves, Selayang, Batu Caves, Maleisië, 68100
Sultan Abdul Samad Building

Visitors will love this distinctive landmark in KL, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Moorish in design, this building, completed in 1897, was formerly the seat of the British colonial government. Perhaps the most photographed building in the city, it features a 40-meter clock tower affectionately dubbed "Big Ben", topped with a golden dome and flanked on both sides by two domed towers. During state occasions, colored lights twinkle in the arches, making it look like a scene from an Arabian Nights' tale.

Jalan Raja, Kuala Lumpur, Maleisië, 50050
Petronas Towers

Petronas Towers is a set of identical postmodern buildings in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Apart from ruling the skyline of this thriving city, it is a symbol of the city's economic progress and unbeatable ambition. Connected by a Skybridge that is deemed to be the world's highest, the vertiginous stretch of the building continues uninterrupted and comes to a stop at the 88th story, where it soars above the city at a height of 451.9 meters (1,483 feet). With an Islam-inspired design, the Petronas Towers dominate the city center and form one of the main commercial hubs in the city, housing top corporate head offices of several companies, including the Petronas Company, and the Suria KLCC retail center. The elevators in the building reflect marvelous engineering as well, with distinct lower-deck and upper-deck sections that take passengers to even-numbered and odd-numbered floors respectively. The Petronas Twin Towers enjoyed the title of the world's tallest building up until 2004 when it was rivaled by the Taipei 101 tower and later the Burj Khalifa in 2010.
