National Art Gallery

Part of the Government Museum, the National Art Gallery displays a comprehensive collection of artworks that depict the rich heritage of India's pulsating fine arts scene. There are separate sections for Tanjore, traditional and decorative art. Another highlight here is the Ravi Varma gallery, which showcases the genius of this master artist, whose paintings emanate a radiant poetic feel, and catches the eyes of all visitors quite effortlessly. The contemporary art section is also worth a watch.

Government Museum

Established in the latter half of the 19th Century, Government Museum houses a stunning range of exhibits that cover diverse study areas and reveals a profound cultural backdrop. There are exhibits covering archeology, anthropology, numismatics, the architectural patterns of India spanning different centuries and the visible evolution of styles. There is also a children's section replete with interesting artifacts that incite curiosity in the little ones. The National Art Gallery, Contemporary Art Gallery and the public library are also part of the museum enclave. The Government Museum is a major landmark and an interesting place to visit in Chennai.

Parthasarathy Temple

With its aesthetic design and brightly colored hues, the Parthasarathy Temple is a spectacular religious sight in Chennai. Dating back to the early 8th century, this temple has visible Pallava styles merged with modern improvisations. Located in a convenient location in Triplicane, the resident deity of the temple is Lord Vishnu in his glorious charioteer avatar, where he acts as the helper and guide to Arjuna, the great warrior in the epic 'Mahabharatha'. This holy spot is visited by many from all over Tamil Nadu and from neighboring states as well. The adjacent pond is beautifully maintained with construction in the center and that completes the surreal ambiance.

Marina Beach

One of the major attractions in the city, Marina Beach has become synonymous with Chennai. Sprawling leisurely across the Bay of Bengal, this fantastic stretch of sandy beach is reputed to be the longest in India. A unique embrace of glinting sands and frothy waters, the shores of the beach are a safe haven of Olive Ridley turtles. The sheer length of the coastline is breathtaking and there are several memorials and statues that pay tribute to great personalities along the beach. Located nearby is a fleet of landmarks and institutions including Madras University, Vivekananda Museum, MGR Memorial Presidency College and Anna Memorial, to name a few. For the average Chennaiite and for tourists as well, this is a respite from the scorching heat; a gleaming vantage point to soak in the sun's evening dip into the Bay of Bengal. The beach also has jogging and walking tracks, landscaped galleries and intriguing art installations, making it one of the most distinctive of its kind across the country.

Arulmigu Kapaleeswarar Temple

Set against the backdrop of a sacred water tank, Kapaleeshwarar Temple is crowned by a vibrantly hued gopuram. The gods, goddesses and mythical creatures that adorn its facade gaze down at the swirling crowds of devotees that flock its auspicious grounds. Considered to be the holy abode of Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakthi, the Arulmigu Kapaleeswarar Temple is a monumental four-storied edifice that enshrines several Hindu deities. During the day, natural light seeps in, giving the temple a splendid sheen and by night, floodlights illuminate the temple from the outside, enhancing its nocturnal beauty. The temple welcomes thousands of devotees week after week who come here to ask for Lord Shiva's blessings. Reverberating with the sound of fervent chants and whispered prayers, Kapaleeshwarar Temple one of the best-known edifices of Mylapore.

Santhome Church

Located close to the Santhome Beach, the colossal Santhome Cathedral Basilica is a glorious sight to behold. Built to honor the memory of St. Thomas who visited Chennai, it attracts devotees from both inside and out of the city. This living church holds regular masses which are well attended by Christian worshipers who come out in full force especially on Sundays. A statue of the Virgin Mary does much to add to its rustic charm; one can safely say that this cathedral is worth a visit for its sheer brilliance in architecture and historical significance.

Fort St. George

Fort St. George is a 17th-century monument that has been beautifully preserved and is now the house of the State Government machinery. Named after St. George, the Fort was under the British empire's custody for a long time. Surviving a few onslaughts by different armies over the centuries, this resistant fort remains intact. The original design is well-maintained and one can even see the guards' trench. Also part of this impressive enclave is the Fort Museum and St. Mary's Church which are major tourist attractions in the city.

Fort Museum

Part of the historic Fort St.George enclave, the Fort Museum showcases a fascinating collection of exhibits from the British rule, like weapons and war accessories. The statue of a Lord Cornwallis, one of British India's most illustrious Governor Generals, is a major attraction, especially for history enthusiasts. Also part of the exhibits, are articles from an adjacent church, combative military uniforms and other memorabilia from the colonial era. Fort Museum attracts tourists and locals alike as it evokes memories of a not-so-forgotten past.

Guindy National Park

Providing a tranquil contrast to the metropolitan vibe of Chennai, the Guindy National Park is one of the smallest national parks in the country. A part of the estates of the Governor’s residence, the national park is located in one of the busiest areas of the city. Canopies of trees are formed over meandering trails, adding to the natural allure of the park. Its expanse, characterized by thorn forests and dry evergreen scrub forest, is dotted with sugar apple and wood apple trees. Home to several mammals like blackbucks, spotted deer, and jackal, it houses over 150 avifaunal species like parakeets, yellow and red-wattled lapwings, grey partridge, crow pheasant, and rosy pelicans. A snake park and children’s zoo is also located on the premises of the park. A popular tourist attraction, the Guindy National Park is a small yet significant natural reserve.

Cholamandal Artists' Village

Cholamandal Artists' Village is a community of artists who imagined creating an environment conducive to artistic growth. The idea they come up with was to set up a village where like-minded people could live together and creatively influence each other. This quixotic idea was realised with the artist's own funds and they made the natural setting even more delightful. Part of Cholamandal Artists' Village is an art gallery that displays the works of residing artists. Also within these confines is an open air theater named 'Bharathi', where regular discussions and seminars featuring learned artists are held.

Madras Crocodile Bank

Ever wondered what it's like to be in the august company of 1000 hungry and ferocious crocodiles and alligators? If not, then the Madras Crocodile Bank can make that fantasy come true, but of course the crocs will be caged or barricaded for your safety. This unusual bank consists of around 800 marsh crocodiles from India; giving them company are a few humongous gharials known mainly for their size. One of the highlights of this spine-chilling bank is the under-water 8-feet gharial which almost looks artificial because of its stationery posture. Apart from all these dangerous natural creations, the bank is also a home to turtles and snakes from different reptilian families. On certain days, the bank organizes venom extraction shows and weekend safaris too. Not to forget the croc-shop within the premises selling quirky crocodile souvenirs and goodies. The Madras Crocodile Bank is right up in the top 5, with regards to tourism in Chennai.
