Touted to be the tallest in the country's northeastern expanses, Mount Washington is where incredible, frigid landscapes unfold in all their magnificent glory. Once believed to be the home of the gods by the Abenaki people, Mount Washington was left untouched until European settlers ascended the mountain in 1642. The mid-19th Century saw a surge in tourism when the mountain became one of the nation's first tourist attractions with the building of two hotels and equestrian trails. A hiking wonderland, the mountain is most known for its dramatic climate which bears intermingled semblances of alpine, tundra and sub-arctic temperatures. Its meandering Appalachian trail winds through some of the most breathtaking landscapes. Towering over the charming, snow-cloaked landscaped of Coos County, Mount Washington's beauty is amplified by rustic, wooden cabins dotted along its course. A perfect embodiment of 'Heaven on Earth', Mount Washington shelters the historic Cog Railway, which is the first of its kind in the world.
