A time-honored tradition on the island is a trip to Murdick's candy store. The shop has been selling high-quality fudge and brittle since 1887. To this day, the old fashioned fudge is cooked strictly in copper pots and cooled on a marble table. Try one of the many flavored fudge creations such as Cape Cod Cranberry, Chocolate Walnut or Butter Pecan; the list is extensive. If you cannot decide, this candy shop offers a combination package with three slices of fudge and Cashew Brittle. There are additional candy shops in Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven.
Corporate America has yet to come to Martha's Vineyard, and the pleasant result is an assortment of locally-owned shops such as this gem of a bookstore. Bunch of Grapes carries best selling titles as well as hard-to-find selections. You'll get personal attention from friendly staff willing to share their literary wisdom and offer suggestions. Pulitzer Prize winners and other famous authors have been on the schedule in the past.
There are no chain stores to be found on Nantucket. While that lends the island a personality difficult to find on the mainland, it does mean that there are no department stores to be found...except, that is, for Murray's Toggery Shop. Murray's sells men's, women's and children's clothing and shoes, with an emphasis on variety. In addition, Murray's has a section set aside for "Nantucket Reds", clothing in the unofficial color of the island.
Alley's General Store has been in business since 1858 and is on the list of historic sites of the Martha's Vineyard Preservation Trust as the oldest operating retailer on the island. You can get everything from fishing lures to freshly prepared meals at this popular, local hangout. Relax on the front porch benches or get a bite to eat around the back.

A piece of furniture from the Hepler gallery will be treasured for generations. Each piece is made from selected high-quality wood and guaranteed for the lifetime of the original owner. The furniture is durable, unlike what you find in many furniture chains. The owner, Larry Hepler, moved to the Vineyard and began making furniture over 15 years ago. You will have the honor of owning a hand-crafted original that is sure to compliment any room. Many clients play a role in the creation process. Each piece is signed, dated and numbered for authenticity. The team of craftsmen designs everything from rocking chairs and dressers to tables. Each piece is available in cherry or maple, or more expensive black walnut or teak. Make sure to call ahead because this gallery is by appointment only.
