Wind and water have sculpted exotic forms in the coastal rocks of Falaises d'Etretat. West of the pebble beach, the steep cliff of Falaise d'Aval with its two massive stone arches—the Porte d'Aval and the Manneporte and the Aiguille sea stack—impose the landscape. At the eastern end, on the other hand, the Falaise d'Amont adjoins the beach with its gigantic archway. Both cliffs are popular viewing points and served as a motif for numerous famous painters including Monet.
The rock known as Aiguille d'Etretat rises out of the sea beside the arch of the Falaise d'Aval.
