This state park, located just a few miles south of San Juan Bautista, is a wonderful place for nature and outdoor enthusiasts. The 162-acre (65.55 hectares) park is mainly characterized by pine and California oak woodlands which are home to many wild species. You can hike, camp, or spend a day out in this beautiful region. The hike up to Fremont Peak leads to some stunning views of the Monterey Bay and the Pacific Ocean from the summit. You can even gaze at the different wonders in the sky through a telescope available at its astronomical observatory, which is open to the public on select evenings.
Established in 1986 and run by the Fremont Peak Observatory Association, this astronomical observatory is located on the Fremont Peak in the Fremont Peak State Park. A number of programs and events with the sole intention of bringing astronomy to the public are held here by the trained volunteers who run this place. It uses the Challenger Telescope, one of the largest telescopes available for public use, for visitors to gaze at some extraordinary wonders in the night sky. Planning your visit is highly recommended.
