This old historic building which is now open to public for visit, was a prison once upon a time in Monterey. It was constructed in 1854 and served as the public jail until 1956. It has imprisoned lawbreakers for over a century and in its history no one managed to escape its walls. It has become a part of Colton Hall Museum and is a popular tourist spot in California now over the years.

The 19th-century building, is today converted into a musem delineating tales of California's history as well as governance of the state. Located near the Fisherman’s Wharf, the Custom House Plaza is named after the historic Custom House that is located here. This building was built by the former Mexican administration in the 1820s, and was used for the collection of taxes. This plaza is a very prominent square in the city, and is the venue for several major events, like the Monterey Greek Festival. So, do pay a visit to this attraction when visiting the city.
The Old Customhouse is a Spanish Colonial style building that's famous because it's where US Commodore John Drake Sloat declared that California was part of the United States in 1846. Built in 1827, this historic building was used for civic purposes of Monterey County. The one-story structure, with a balcony in the front, reflects the olden style homes. This is the oldest government building in the state and the first State Historic Landmark.
Casa Soberanes is a beautiful house that was built in the mid-19th century by Rafael Estrada. Built using adobe clay, this old structure features a striking blue-colored gate. In 1860, this house was sold to the Soberanes family. After several restorations, the present owners have opened this old house to the public.
