Adam Thoroughgood House is known for being one of the oldest homes around town. Named after the native community leader, the house was built in 1680 by his grandson. The medieval cottage is an adorable sight with its typical English facades and quaint interiors.
Dating back to 1775, Old Point Comfort Lighthouse is one of the oldest lights in Chesapeake Bay. The structure as it is today is the work done between 1800 and 1801 by Elzy Burroughs. Towering about 58 feet (18 meters) high, it was temporarily seized by the British in 1812. As of today, the tower is not open to public but the grounds are often visited by tourists at Fort Monroe. Today, visitors can tour the premises of Old Point Comfort Lighthouse and learn about its history and importance in maritime navigation. It is also possible to view the lighthouse from the nearby Fort Monroe beach.
Dominion Tower is an iconic 26-story building, one of the tallest in the city, and stands sentinel on the banks of the Elizabeth River. The building is mainly used for offices and also houses a restaurant, wine shop, and cafe. Dominion Tower offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and the river. Because it is conveniently situated in downtown Norfolk, amenities like shopping centers, restaurants, cafes, and entertainment venues are all easily accessible.
This 83-foot tall granite statue is a wonderful memorial to one of the principle defenders of American civil liberties, Martin Luther King. The base of the monument is inscribed with his most significant quotes. It is one of the tallest monuments of its kind in the United States and it well worth a visit. Only street parking is available.
