This 83-foot tall granite statue is a wonderful memorial to one of the principle defenders of American civil liberties, Martin Luther King. The base of the monument is inscribed with his most significant quotes. It is one of the tallest monuments of its kind in the United States and it well worth a visit. Only street parking is available.
This tall monument, found in the West Point Cemetery, is one of the one African-American Civil War monuments in the South. After a long, fraught building process, the monument was finally completed in 1920, in honor of all the African-American soldiers that lost their lives. The soldier depicted at the monument's top is Sergeant William H. Carney, the son of two emancipated slaves. The monument bears an inscription in his honor - and all the other soldiers that died - at the base.
This 23,000 square feet venue is spacious and is the home to one of the biggest indoor skate parks on the East Coast. The venue is frequented by over 5,000 skateboarding enthusiasts from Hampton Road, who also support the attached skate shop, which provides the necessary hardware for people to both stay safe and have fun. The skate park is also available for private events and instruction.
Aberdeen Gardens is a community that was planned for the resettlement of African Americans. Built in 1934, its construction included several houses, stores and gardens spread over 440 acres (180 hectares). This neighborhood is featured on the National Register of Historic Places.
