Roseway Theater was originally built in 1924. Featuring just a single screen, the theater was recently renovated, yet still retains its historical charm. Prices are reasonable with special rates that apply to students, seniors, kids and matinees. A local favorite, this intimate theater is far from the usual multiplex and offers a unique and budget friendly movie experience for all ages. For more than 75 years, The Grotto has held a special place in the hearts of the locals. The 62-acre (25.09 hectares) site is a Catholic sanctuary that also features beautifully kept botanical gardens. Visit the shrine of "Our Lady's Grotto," which is not only spiritual, but a geological marvel since it's a cave carved into the base of a cliff with a replica of the Pietà sculpture in the center of the rock cave. After admiring the shrine, take the time to tour the grounds and marvel at the beautiful plants then visit the spectacular gift shop. Visitors are also welcome to attend mass. If you want a real treat visit during annual Festival of Lights. While the lower grounds and gift shop are free to visit, there is a small fee to enter the upper levels of The Grotto.
This little-known estate and grounds are landscaped like a French palace. Called The Garden of the Bishop's Close, it was given to the Episcopal Diocese of Portland by the Kerr family in 1957. Different plant varieties are labeled, making it an educational tour of Northwest plant life. No matter what the season, this is always a great place to visit. A winding, somewhat hilly pathway can get steep, so you may want to stick to the flatland. No bicycles, picnics, food or drinks are allowed, but admission is free.
Boasting of the splendid vistas of the St. Johns Bridge, Cathedral Park is surrounded by lush greenery. The gothic arched supports are magnificently medieval and make this 17.5-acre (8 hectare) parcel of land quite enchanting. Enjoy a restful afternoon gazing up at one of the world's loveliest bridges. An excellent picnic pick, Cathedral Park also has a stage, soccer field, boat ramp and restrooms. The flat trails are great for the nature walk along the river and there are no fees to use the park. Whether it is a family picnic or a romantic evening that you want to spend, Cathedral Park is an ideal venue.
The Aerie at Eagle Landing is set atop the Mt. Scott and is one of the most scenic and romantic venues in the city.
