Long before he was president of the United States, Herbert Hoover lived here in Oregon. At the age of 11 (in 1885), he moved in with his uncle, Dr. John Henry Minthorn and grew up in this large house, which was restored in the 1950s. Among displays are some of the original furniture and decor. Admission charges vary for adults, seniors and children. Newberg is about a one-hour drive south of Portland.
Draped in an evergreen canopy that blankets its expanse, Battle Ground Lake State Park makes for a peaceful excursion amid verdant surrounds. The park, which features an eponymous crater lake, invites visitors to explore its scenic wilderness on foot or horseback or picnic by the lakeshore. You can also choose to paddle along pristine waters, go for a swim, or fish. Those who wish to stay longer can set up camp in the woods and enjoy the serenity of the environs.
The Chehalem Cultural Center celebrates cultural diversity through a varied offer of events, workshops and educational programs in fields such as dance, photography, ceramics, movement and more. The center seeks to enrich the lives of all those it serves through spreading awareness of and creating opportunities for the exploration of the performing, visual and literary arts. Housed in a heritage school building, the Chehalem Cultural Center is where people come together to partake of the region's rich cultural heritage and understand contemporary trends in a social setting where there is always something new to learn.
