Largo di Torre Argentina

The ancient buildings that can be seen here were discovered during excavation work in the 1920s. The four temples from the Republican era were named A, B, C and D. Temple C is the oldest, Temple A is from the 3rd Century BCE, and some of the flooring and mosaics of Temple B are still visible. Although Temple C was built in 100 BCE, the mosaic decorations were added during a later period. Currently, this historic sight is a no-kill cat sanctuary that houses abandoned cats from the area. Stray cats are taken in, given shots, sprayed and given a home at the sanctuary, where they now abound. Whether you are a history buff or a cat lover, you have to see this sight.

Capuchin Crypt

Bizarre and captivating, the crypt of the Capuchin Friars is worth the venture off the well-beaten tourist path in Rome. The crypt or cemetery lies under the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini. Dating back to the 17th century, this underground ossuary is adorned with the skeletal remains of thousands of friars, arranged in intricate patterns and ornate displays that serve as a poignant reminder of the transient nature of human existence. Skulls flanked by shoulder blades create angelic figures looming above on the ceiling and the final room contains the skeleton of a child grim reaper and the inscription "What you are, we once were too and what we are now, you will be".

Museo Laboratorio della Mente

Of interest to readers of the mind, the Museo Laboratorio della Mente provides all the research required for you to know what goes on in the mind. To learn about problems related to mental health, psychology, criminal insights and mentally unstable people, this place offers an avenue into reading different mindsets. Working closely with psychiatric hospitals, the center is known for training in positive mental health. They offer their rooms for conference and training purposes as well. The museum is the result of collaboration with Studio Azzurro and presents itself as a narrative museum, a documentary of the history of the institution and a mirror to society facilitating reflection on diversity and social ostracization. It also houses the erstwhile asylum’s scientific, historical, pharmacological, medical, scientific and irregular collections. Art from the ‘80s and ‘90s ids featured as well.

Museum of the Sanitary Arts

One of the most offbeat museums, the National Historic Museum of Sanitary Art, inaugurated in 1933, is hosted adjoining the Santo Spirito in Sassia and is surely a must-visit spot! The museum helps us understand how students are taught the art of healing and sanitation. The museum also exhibits some bottled lifeforms redolent of a scientists' lab. The Siamese twins are a major draw. Pope Innocent III founded the hospital in 1198 with a view, among other things, to teach medicine and equipped it thus. The museum consists of rooms largely categorized per the major components of the collections housed within: the Alexandrine Hall; the Flaiani Hall; the Capparoni Hall, portable apothecharies and the Carbonelli Hall.

Bocca della Verità

Found within the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, the Bocca della Verita is a large marble mask carved in the image of an unknown bearded man. Its original purpose remains unclear to historians, who theorize everything from its function as a drain cover to its use as a bloodletting tool by cattle merchants during sacrificial ceremonies. The mask is believed to date back at least as far as the 13th Century, having only sat in its current location since the 17th Century. Today, legend has it that if you tell a lie with your hand in the sculpture's mouth, your hand will be instantly bitten off. This lore even features in the 1953 classic Roman Holiday when costars Peck and Hepburn test one another's truthfulness before the mystical mask.

Museo delle anime del Purgatorio

The little Museo delle Anime dei Defunti, housed in a room adjacent to the sacristy of the Church of the Sacro Cuore del Suffragio, is a little macaber, but after the initial surprise, you find that it has a mystical atmosphere. The items on show represent handprints left on prayer books by individuals now deceased. An amazing item is the incandescent print of a German nun, which was left on the tunic of one of her colleagues in 1696. The collection was begun in the 20th Century and aims to show the skeptics that there is life after death. To witness some of the strangest experiences, this museum is a must–visit!
