Hidden from the street, if you follow the pedestrian walkway cutting between Fremont Street and 1st Street, you will find this pretty urban plaza. This favorite lunch and escape spot is full of lush plants and trees and plenty of places to sit to take a little breather from fast-paced city life for a bit.
Hidden away at the base of the iconic Transamerica Pyramid, this tranquil space brings an oasis from the Santa Cruz Mountains to the heart of San Francisco's Financial District. When the pyramid was constructed in 1972, architect William Pereira allocated a half-acre at the base for a public park. The park was designed by Tom Galli with mature Redwood trees and it is beautifully manicured with concrete pathways meticulously intertwined with ferns, flowering plants and other shrubs native to Northern California. Only open Monday through Friday, the park is a hidden gem in the bustling metropolis and a favorite spot of local office workers on their lunch break.
This little plaza and garden is hidden among the large buildings in the area. The contemporary design features large boulders forming a rock garden and a dripping fountain. A poem by Robert Haas is engraved on the wall as well. These zen features make this a perfect tranquil escape from the city that surrounds it.
This garden terrace is one of San Francisco's "secret" POPO's, or privately owned public outdoor spaces. Upon entering the building to access the terrace the guard will ask your business, but will quickly let you through if you tell him you are going to the terrace. Tables, chairs and lots of flowers and plants cover the terrace, making it a very pleasant place to take a break from the city or enjoy your lunch.
Often called Ferry Park, Sue Bierman Park is a charming park next to the Ferry Plaza. This green oasis in the busy Financial District is the perfect spot to relax after a day of sightseeing or business meetings. You'll see plenty of joggers, business people enjoying their lunch, and dog walkers here. There is also a great playground for kids.
