Dynamic, ambitious and audacious, Manhattan is that slice of New York City that best personifies the Big Apple way of life. One of the best-known islands of the United States, this borough of New York City is the most densely populated, with over a million people residing within its cosmopolitan depths. The area was long inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans, and welcomed its first European explorer, Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. First referred to as New York County, the borough was founded on November 1, 1683. Rightly dubbed as an amalgam of cultures, Manhattan is the ground of a strong communal tenor, urbane high-rises, an inextricable metropolitan energy and a scintillating nighttime revelry which is both, palpable and infectious. It is home to some of the most famous museums and attractions in the world, including the Empire State Building, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Central Park and Times Square. A breathing canvas of nationalities, hopes and dreams, Manhattan is a sparkling, energetic embodiment of 'the city that never sleeps.'
