Paseo Arts District

What started out as one of the first shopping districts in 1929 gradually evolved to become a haven for jazz musicians, students and small businesses by the end of the 1950s. The end of this era brought with it the counter-culture which determined the atmosphere of the Paseo in the 1960's, but it was only until the next decade that it became one of the country's finest art districts. It fell into some decay through the 80's, however today it has been revitalized and the shops host food, art and music festivals year-round. Don't forget the district's 'First Friday Art Walk', where everyone comes out to buy and sell local wares.

Earth Natural Foods & Garden

Nestled in a residential neighborhood with the feel of a cozy neighborhood market, the Earth Natural Foods is Norman's oldest health food and organic grocery store. Opened in 1969, the inside still exudes the ideals of peace and love. And you need not panic, for all of their fresh produce is organic. The Earth carries a wide selection of bulk herbs, teas, spices, nuts, grains and dried fruit. They also offer an assortment of natural foods grocery items, with many vitamins and vegetarian and vegan options as well as a health and body section. Often, you will find pre-packaged deli goods such as specialty hummus, tabouli and tuna salad brought over from the Earth Cafe & Deli, which used to be located in the grocery store, but is now in a separate location at Campus Corner, right next to the University of Oklahoma a short bicycle ride away. With regard to bicycles, the Earth offers a ten percent discount to customers who arrive by bike or by foot. Those who arrive in cars can park in the gravel lot behind the store, where you will also find a lovely community garden, maintained by volunteers, and picnic tables in the shade, at which you can relax while enjoying your kombucha, tamari almonds and dried mango. Norman is about a half-hour drive south of Oklahoma City along I-35.
