"Historical Heathlands"
Mousehold Heath is a Local nature reserve with heathland and woodland areas located in the city of Norwich. Historically, it has been witness to battles, rebellions and cavalry training grounds. Most famously, it is the site where the body of a young boy was found, believed to be ritually murdered by the Jews in 1144. It led to the first medieval blood libel against the Jews and the boy was declared a saint and martyr. Remains of a chapel erected in his honor can still be seen in north of the heath. The reserve is popular among locals for recreational activities as there are football pitches, a pitch-and-putt course and a band stand available for summer performances. The Norwich Tourist Center frequently organizes free wildlife walks for visitors to appreciate the many diverse species of flora and fauna in the reserve. There are toilet facilities and picnic benches available along with free car parking. It is a pleasant open green space ideal for cycling, mountain biking or simply a walk in the woods with your dog.
