The favored summer home of King Gustav V and Queen Victoria, the Tullgarn Palace is ranked amongst Sweden's finest royal residences, revered for its tasteful, rich and ornate interiors. Although most associated King Gustav V and his queen, the palace was originally built in the 1720s at the site of an older, Renaissance palace. In 1770, the palace was purchased by the state and handed over to Duke Fredrik Adolf. He carried out extensive renovations, and many of the halls and apartments open to the public today are proof of his impeccable taste. A favorite summer retreat for nobles and royalty ever since, the marvelous interiors of Tullgarn Palace reflect varying epochs and the personal style of each former resident. Victoria, Gustavian and Rococo elements blend together at the Tullgarn Palace to create a pleasant contrast to the rather stark facade. Among the attractions at Tullgarn is the Tullgarnsservisen (the Tullgarn porcelain set), which was specially ordered by Adolf Fredrik from China in the late 1700s. Gustav V's cigar room, in particular, has been carefully preserved as he left it upon his demise in 1950.
