"Tapestry of Nature"
Tatami Ishi lies east of Kume Island and is named after its resemblance to the Japanese woven straw mats, although many others prefer comparing them to the pattern of a turtle’s shell. These rock formations are a natural wonder of Nishi-Ou Island, from the volcanic eruption that made the lava flow and cool into this distinct motif to the leveling out of the surface by the ocean’s waves. The ash colored stones contrasted with the bright blue of the surrounding water makes for a picturesque panorama au naturel.
