Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is one of the most family-friendly tourist destinations in the entire country and after visiting you will figure out why. Where else can you stroll through the world's largest man-made jungle, view sharks and other deep-sea inhabitants through a glass-enclosed, walk-through tunnel, take a Lozier IMAX Theatre adventure to the top of Mt. Everest and view hundreds of birds flying freely in a mesh aviary the size of four football fields? Thanks to the diverse landscape and rich wildlife, the zoo was accredited by the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums).

General Crook House Museum

Located on the grounds of the former Fort Omaha, this beautiful home dates back to the 1800s. It is closely tied to the U.S. military, acting as headquarters for commanders during the fort's active years. A walk through the front door takes visitors back in time. Furnishings and décor hail from the Victorian era. The Victorian Heirloom Garden also stays true to history, growing flowers representative of those found in the 1880s. The garden can be reserved for private parties.

Saint Cecilia Cathedral

Opened in 1959, the imposing Saint Cecilia Cathedral is one of the largest cathedrals not just in the city, but also in the country. Built using the Spanish Revival style, the church features striking architectural details. The interiors are no less extravagant with beautiful paintings, frescoes and sculptures. The modern organ remains central to the church's varied musical program.

Boys Town

This National Historic Landmark tells a story dating back to 1917. What started as a small home for troubled and abandoned boys has grown into a campus complete with a Hall of History, All-American Rose and Biblical Gardens, the Leon Myers Stamp Center and more. Visitors can even enjoy a bit of Hollywood, as Spencer Tracy's Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan in the movie "Boys Town" is on display. Boys Town is open year-round. Free guided tours are available but donations are welcome.

Old Market

No visit to Omaha is complete without a stop in the Old Market with its cobblestone streets. This eclectic corner of the city lays claim to some of the best shops and restaurants in town. Enjoy Italian at Vivace, invite a special someone to The French Cafe or sip a microbrew at the Upstream. Small shops offer everything from alternative music to cultural clothing, even a year-round selection of Christmas decorations. Several art galleries are also located in the area.

Joslyn Castle

Take a trip back in time to 1903 with a visit to the exquisite family home of George and Sarah Joslyn, two of Omaha's most respected historical citizens. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this Scottish-Baronial style home boasts four stories and 35 rooms. Originally built at $250,000, the Joslyn Castle is located in the beautiful Gold Coast district and is across the street from the Cornerstone Bed and Breakfast. The castle is open to the public on the first and third Sundays of each month.
