Top Rated Attractions in Omaha

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is one of the most family-friendly tourist destinations in the entire country and after visiting you will figure out why. Where else can you stroll through the world's largest man-made jungle, view sharks and other deep-sea inhabitants through a glass-enclosed, walk-through tunnel, take a Lozier IMAX Theatre adventure to the top of Mt. Everest and view hundreds of birds flying freely in a mesh aviary the size of four football fields? Thanks to the diverse landscape and rich wildlife, the zoo was accredited by the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums).

Lauritzen Gardens

Flora and fauna from around the world cover 100 acres (40 hectares) just south of downtown Omaha. Visitors do not have to be experts to appreciate beauty, because this attraction focuses on educating both children and adults. First launched in 1982, the site now features the Robert H. Storz Family Rose Garden, an arboretum and herb garden. A children's garden offers additional activities for the little ones.

Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge

A result of remarkable engineering, this iconic pedestrian bridge ribbons beautifully along Omaha's sweeping skyline, spanning the width of the Missouri River from Omaha, Nebraska to Council Bluffs, Iowa. It also allows excellent accessibility to numerous nature trails in the area. Christened in honor of former Nebraska Senator Bob Kerrey for his remarkable contribution that helped establish federal financing for the project, the bridge was officially opened to the public on September 28, 2008. For a brief period, the 3,000 foot-long (914.4 meters) bridge was the first structure of its kind to link two states while enabling pedestrians to gaze at the restful waters of the Missouri River from a height of 60 feet (18.28 meters). Since the bridge traverses the boundary that lies between Nebraska and Iowa, visitors can quite literally stand with one foot in each state.

Heartland of America Park

Take a walk along the riverfront in this 31-acre (12 hectares) park. Conveniently located in downtown Omaha, visitors will enjoy the breathtaking beauty of a lake and two fountains. The more modern, computerized Heartland of America fountain shoots water into the air and features a colorful nighttime light show. A ride on the General Marion tour boat proves interesting, as well as fun. Live concerts add to the relaxed atmosphere on Friday nights in June, July and August.

Fontenelle Forest

Watch the mystery of natural events unfold before you at the Fontenelle Forest. This popular wooded area occupies 1400 acres of beautiful Nebraska forest and floodplains situated along the Missouri River. Sixteen miles of trails meander through picturesque land for hikers and birdwatchers. The visitor center offers interactive educational exhibits, a one-mile wheelchair-accessible boardwalk, a gift shop and more. Facilities for parties, meetings and receptions are also available.

Zorinsky Lake Park

Nestled amid a growing suburb, this lake and recreation area sits on more than 1,000 acres of land. You will find baseball fields and a soccer field, features not available at similar city lakes. Of course, fishing and boating are the main attractions. Visitors also make good use of the biking and walking path. No matter the weather, bring along something to eat. Covered picnic areas ensure not even a rain shower will ruin your lunch or supper. Admission is free.
