One of the most visited attractions in the city, the Osaka Aquarium is a must on the city itinerary. The natural environments of the Pacific "Ring of Fire," the volcanic perimeter which surrounds the Pacific Ocean, have been recreated in 14 separate exhibits and populated with over 35,000 specimens representing over 380 species in the aquarium. Located in the harbor area of the city, the aquarium is centered on a huge nine-meter (27 feet) deep-water tank, which represents the Pacific Ocean. A range of animals from otters, seals, and sea lions among others are also a part of different exhibits here. The opening hours are seasonal so it is advised to check them well in advance.

The sprawling park surrounding Osaka Castle actually sees far more visitors than the actual castle itself. It is easy to understand why, given its beauty, especially during certain seasons. To the east, there is a grove of about 1,200 plum trees of varying varieties and colors. In November, you will not want to miss the chrysanthemum festival. The cherry trees in spring and other blooming shrubs and flowers are equally popular. Besides flora galore, there are jogging paths, a baseball field and other facilities such as a music hall.

Kishiwada Castle (Chikiri Castle) is one of the many lovely castles in the Osaka Prefecture. Built in 1597, this historic structure was destroyed by stroke of lightning, however it was completely developed later on. Rebuilt and restored, the castle currently houses a folk museum and is the center of all activities during the famous Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri festival hosted here every year.

For the best view of Osaka, head to the Floating Garden Observatory (Kuchu Teien Tenbodai). Towering at 557 feet (169.7 meters) it offers a breath-taking panoramic view of the city. Placed between the towers of the Umeda Sky building, this observatory seems like something out of a sci-fi movie! Your only way to get up is via a super fast glass elevator - a terrifying ride if you're scared of heights! But you can forget all fears with a drink from the lounge on board. Enjoy the great breeze and this breath-taking perception of Osaka city.

Just a short distance from the city center and train station of Minoo City is the abundant natural beauty of Minoo Park. You can find wild monkeys here and learn about insects at the Insect Museum. The museum displays some 9,500 specimens from about 2,600 species both from Japan and overseas. There is also a Butterfly Garden and a large 200-square-meter hothouse where more than 200 specimens flit about, allowing one to view them in their natural habitat throughout the seasons. Admission: free.
