Constructed in the 16th Century, Stratemakerstoren is a massive fortress in Nijmegen. The bastion was built to shield the neighboring gate of Veerpoort. The tower also remains the fort's oldest element as it dates back to the 14th Century. After cannon were invented, Stratemakerstoren faced the constant threat from gunfire. Thus, the structure's height was reduced and it was rebuilt in a horseshoe shape, featuring two case-mates and a sunken corridor. The fortress tower features in several old prints and art works including Valkhof painting. The castle museum organizes temporary exhibitions focusing on historic themes and subjects.
