This theatre was built at the end of the 19th century to meet the cultural needs of the local middle-classes. It's a plain and sober design with Tuscan pillars on the ground floor. It has a great reputation within Spain for it's program of grand seasonal productions with occasional one-off productions. During the year there's an opera season, a theatre season, the Festival de la Zarzuela (Spanish light opera), a folk contest, international piano events, concerts and other musical performances. Tickets for the Zarzuela cost from 4000 ptas. The prestigious Premios Principe de Asturias prizes are presented at this theatre every year. The auditorium seats 1440. This church is located in the heart of the shopping area. It was designed by Luis Garcia Bellido and built in 1915. It's a surprising mixture of Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Byzantine features, with lots of mosaics inside. The main façade is in pink stone, with rose-shaped windows. Twin towers straddle the entrance. The floorplan is a Latin cross with a dome above the transept and there are Byzantine-style frescos and Viennese-style confessionals inside along with some valuable paintings, such as one of our Lady of Sorrows at the foot of the Cross. The late General Franco was married at this church. Visitors are admitted during services and there's no admission charge.
