Monte Pellegrino

"Tyrrhenian Sea's Mighty Guard"

The 606 m high chalk cliff is Palermo's holy mountain. This is where, in 1624, a shepherd is supposed to have found the mortal remains of St. Rosalia after she had appeared before him in a dream. The remains were carried in a procession to Palermo, which was ravaged by the plague, whereupon the disease disappeared. Palermo had a new patron saint. The place of pilgrimage consists of a grotto with an altar and a marble statue of the saint, in front of which a chapel was built.
