The Orto botanico (Botanical Gardens), accessible through Via Lincoln, are home to a wealth of lush vegetation and some beautiful neoclassical buildings. The central building, called Ginnasio, was used to house the classrooms, the library and the director's office. Nowadays, the Orto occupies ten hectares (25 acres), and thanks to the city's mild climate, it is surrounded by lush fruit trees: bamboo, pinapple, lime, banana and others.

The little theater directed by Mimmo Cuticchio, in the pedestrian precinct of Olivella, is a precious treasure of Palermo. It is still possible to attend the traditional Sicilian puppet shows, known as Opera dei Pupi, which date back to the first half of 19th Century. The fanciful stories recount the wonderful adventures of Charlemagne and his French knights, a Sicilian folk version of the Song of Roland, or Ludovico Ariosto’s poems. Cuticchio offers a classical repertory consisting of more than three hundred tales, but one can also witness experimental shows in which puppets interact with the audience and leave the comfort of the scenery and stage. The Puppet Master, who inherited the theater from his father, is an absolute artist: a charming story teller, director, teacher and puppet maker; it is possible to admire him handcrafting puppets in his workshop near the theater. Sicilian Pupi are traditionally colorful, wooden puppets with sparkling armors and plumed helmets, and completely jointed, following Palermo's tradition. It is considered so precious that their show was declared a Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO.
