Located at the heart of Mecca Hills, the aptly-name Painted Canyon comprises of exposed, colorful rock surfaces painted in rose, pink, red, purple and green hues by various mineral deposits. Reaching this place requires a four mile moderately-easy hike beginning from the Painted Canyon Road. There are also many ladders that help hikers to navigate easily through the sandy canyon floors. The trail is not only dotted with Palo Verde and Smoke Trees and wildflowers like the rare Mecca Aster but it’s also possible to spot the occasional Bighorn sheep or prairie falcons as you navigate through the magnificent canyon. Travelers are advised to be equipped with proper maps and lots of drinking water and to not carry any valuables on themselves or even leave any behind in the car.
