"From Colonial to Culture"
In the rich historical setting of a neighborhood that has been inhabited since the 17th century, contemporary culture is enriched by the physical surroundings that have witnessed hundreds of years of human activity. Today, Casa Góngora hosts free jazz concerts and a variety of art exhibits surrounded by restored woodwork and 18th-century architecture. The structure was built in 1756 to be the home of a Spanish pearl merchant, and survived three fires during years of use as a church and then as a small museum. An early 21st-century restoration accompanied the installation of the Casa de la Cultura y del Artista Panameña, a vibrant cultural center managed by the township. The schedule includes art exhibitions, folkloric presentations, fashion shows, and free jazz concerts every Wednesday at 8p.
