Compañia de Jesús

The colonial ruins in Casco Viejo are so interesting partially because the restoration underway in this neighborhood exposes different stages of rebuilding and decay so that visitors can witness many stages of the process in a short time. The Compañia de Jesús has a handsome dignity in itself, with a beautiful brickwork front that betrays nothing of the white-walled courtyard behind it. Untended plantings are visible through great doorways and windows in the structure where it faces the Plaza de Independencia. Inspired by this existing informal garden, plans for the ruins include botanical gardens and a museum of the site to eventually be housed in the renovated structure.
