National Theatre of Panama
"Grand Performances"
Supporting the most spectacular notions of how a night at the theater should be hosted, the National Theatre of Panama of San Felipe dazzles the crowds with its every nook. Reds, yellows, and pinks color the bold exterior, with classical statues tucked into a series of alcoves. The interior blooms with golden and scarlet tiered balconies, chandeliers, ceiling murals and frescoes depicting scenes from Panama's history and Greek mythology. Originally a convent and then an army barracks, the Teatro was remodeled in 1908, restored in 1974, and once more in 2004 after a partial roof collapse. The interior is so remarkable that visitors pay simply to enter and take a look around, but entering as a member of the audience for theater, classical orchestra concerts, or ballet performances is generally preferable.
