Gladbach Abbey is a former abbey dating back to the 10th Century. It was established by Gero, the then Archbishop of Cologne along with a monk from Trier named Sandrad. It belonged to the Benedictine monks and developed over the years to form the city of Gladbach, presently Mönchengladbach. The monastery was used as a military established by French soldiers in 1802. Later, it housed a textile mill. Today, it is used as a city hall known as Rathaus Abtei. Other town offices operate from the adjacent structures.
