Pitmedden Garden & Museum Of Farming Life

The Great Garden,is the centerpiece of this property, that was originally laid out in 1675 by Sir Alexander Seton, 1st Baronet of Pitmedden. The elaborate designs of the original 17th-century setting have been carefully re-created. The Museum of Farming Life is included in the 40 hectare (100 acre) estate, presenting a vivid picture of the days when the horse was the power that drove the workforce. A stroll in the wildlife garden, or woodland area will work up an appetite for relaxing at the picnic area or enjoying a welcome cup of tea in the Visitor Centre, completing a pleasant visit.

New Slains Castle

A dangerously ruinous structure, the New Slains Castle should be explored with utmost care and protection. Left to nature’s mercy, the castle has immensely deteriorated over the years. It has an unsettling aura about it and surprisingly enough, the castle was the inspiration behind author Bram Stoker’s story Dracula. After the Old Slains Castle was destroyed in 1594, the new castle was constructed and stands at about six miles south-west of the present site.

St Mary's Chapel

Constructed in the 13th Century by William Comyn, Earl of Buchan, in memory of his son who drowned in a well nearby, the St Mary's Chapel, is one of the oldest structures still standing in North East Scotland. There always has been a mystery regarding the built of the chapel as the plain architectural form and general finishes of the chapel are in a sharp contrast to the workmanship on the decorative detailing of the window and doorway openings. Neglected and in ruins, the chapel still has a very calm and relaxing feel about it.
