Founded in 1905, the Philadelphia Canoe Club holds scheduled excursions along local streams and rivers such as the Schuylkill, Wissahickon Creek and the Delaware. The club is open to all persons that wish to participate in events or training sessions. Pleasant, leisurely trips more conducive to sightseeing are planned along with attempts to conquer the whitewater rapids of the area. A small fee is required for canoe rental via the club. Nockamixon State Park is a popular destination among locals and tourists alike. Spread across 5,286 acres (2,139.17 hectares), this parkland is a haven for wildlife and nature enthusiasts as well as those who love the outdoors. It features picnic spots, a swimming pool, loop trails, hiking trails, bicycle trails, disc golfing, a fishing pond, cabins and a hostel. Enjoy water activities like boating, windsurfing, kayaking, motorboating, whitewater rafting and fishing at the 1,450 acres (586.79 hectares) Lake Nockamixon. This state park opened in 1973, even offers hunting zones in nearly half of its property. Horseback riding, mountain biking and winter sports such as ice fishing, skating, sledding and cross-country skiing are included in the offing. They also have educational programs for schools. Whether you want to treat the kids to a good time or work off the calories you just consumed at a Penn's Landing restaurant, skating at the Blue Cross River Rink can do the trick.
