"Vast Burial Space"
Camposanto Monumentale can trace its roots back to 1278 when Archbishop Ubaldo Lanfranchi brought back soil from Golgotha in Jerusalem where Christ was crucified. This massive holy field was subsequently built during the Crusades, and used as a burial ground for the rich folks of Pisa. The frescoes were destroyed during air raids by US warplanes and the Nazis during World War II. Luckily a few still survived, and the Camposanto's former glory was restored with extensive refurbishments. Call ahead for varying day timings in March.
