Bauernmöbelmuseum

Located at the western gate of the Grafenauer Kurpark, Bauernmöbelmuseum has an elaborate collection of farm furniture brought from all parts of the Bavarian Forest. It consists of two farmhouses, a carriage shed, and a grain bin. The two houses have extensive documents related to the art of painting farm furniture in the Bavarian forest. While the carriage shed and the “Grain Box” have old farm equipment and tools like heavy pull sleds, broom clams, and more. In addition to the furniture, the museum also showcases reverse glass pictures and wax sticks, glasses, household items, and a weaving room.

Abtei Schweiklberg

Abtei Schweiklberg is a Benedictine monastery, consecrated in the year 1904, located in the lower Bavarian town of Vilshofen an der Donau. The abbey, has an extensive library with more than 150,000 books, living quarters, a refectory, an infirmary and an art nouveau chapel which was built by the famous German architect, Michael Kurz. A part of the monastery also houses the Africa Museum which contains displays of tribal artifacts brought back by missionaries returning from Africa. An interesting fact about the monastery is the production of Schweiklberger Geist which is a herbal medicine made here and transported across the world.

Pfarrkirche St. Johannes der Täufer

Propsteikirche St. Johannes der Täufer belongs to the former monastery of Rinchnach. After being destroyed several times, the new church was finally built in the year 1255. Consecrated in 1438 by Passau Bishop Matthias, the church served as a major religious center of the city. While the external facade of the church is unassuming, inside, the church is full of rich decorations. Some of the significant elements of the church include the elegant stucco, lovely ceiling and wall frescoes and the impressive 17th-century altar.

Rieslochfälle

Rieslochfälle is a 55 meter (180.44 feet) high waterfall in the Bavarian forest of Bodenmais, Germany. Its location makes it an impressive natural spectacle when water levels rise during rains and the snow melting season. Divided into five mostly sliding main steps, the main case of this waterfall is about 15 meters (49.21 feet) high. The waterfalls mostly experience low water levels as the water in their upper part has been diverted to generate electricity.

Freiherr von Poschinger Glasmanufaktur

Freiherr von Poschinger Glasmanufaktur is a historic glassworks factory which has been around for more than 450 years. While the factory is still active, parts of the historic structure have been preserved as a museum. Today, tours of the museum are conducted through the summer months wherein visitors not only get to learn about and see the process of making hand blown glass but also take part in making some themselves. A collection of many of the pieces produced by the factory over the centuries forms another one of the museum's displays. As one of the first factories in Germany to create custom-made glass pieces, their shop holds an array of beautiful and innovative pieces which range from cutlery to finely crafted decorative items.

Asambasilika Altenmarkt

Asambasilika in Osterhofen is the Baroque basilica of a historic monastery known as Osterhofen Abbey. From outside, the church looks like a plain building with a tower and steeple. Once inside, however, you are encompassed by splendorous Baroque art and architecture, fit for the Kingdom of God. A dazzling stucco with gold ornaments and breathtaking frescoes depicting Biblical scenes surround you on all sides. Each decor element jostles for attention, from the breathtaking sculptures, golden figurines and lamps to the high altar and organ loft. Indeed, there is not an inch of space that does not bear a Baroque painting or carving. The white and golden interiors seem to dazzle with the brilliance of a paradise on earth.

Katholische Pfarramt Mariä Himmelfahrt

Established in the 14th Century, Kirche Mariä Himmelfahrt is a magnificent church with a rich history. Excavations at the church site reveal that the current building had predecessors from the 13th Century. Today, you can see Gothic architecture at the church’s structure. One of the most prominent features of the church is the ornate vaulted ceiling located within the tympanum. There’s an epitaph depicting the Resurrection and two grave stones dating back to the 18th Century in this ceiling. The church has an organ from the 18th Century as well. The wall paintings were added in 1750 and were painted by artist Joseph Wilhelm Seidl.

Pfahl
