Zion Lutheran Church

"Belluschi's Marvel"

The history of the Zion Lutheran Church dates back to the end of the 19th Century, and worship took place at a Gothic Revival structure that was used for 60 years since its construction in 1890. The beautiful modern structure, facing Portland's Southwest 18th Avenue, was established in 1950, replacing the old church. It was designed by esteemed American architect Pietro Belluschi, who pioneered the Modern Movement in architecture. A dominant feature of this church is the conical steeple, made of cooper, which houses a cross atop it. Zion Lutheran Church was added to the Naional Register of Historical Places in 1996.
