Rio Douro

"Oporto's River"

The Douro is a river full of energy and generosity. It is thanks to this golden river, originating in the high mountains of Urbion (Spain) and running for 930 kilometers (558 miles) into the Atlantic Ocean, that the city of Oporto exists. For centuries, the Douro river was the main transportation channel used to bring the casks of Port wine (produced in the mountain region of Alto Douro) to the city of Oporto. The boats used during the transport of the cask are known as rabelo boats.
