"A Peek Into Medieval Times"

Tall, imposing, and austerely formidable in its granite splendor, the Castle of Santa Maria da Feira was built on the erstwhile site of a Roman settlement. Archaelogical evidences also point out that the castle may have been constructed over the site of a local deity's shrine, a claim that remains unconfirmed. Perched on a hilltop in the outskirts of the city, the Castle of Santa Maria da Feira is one of Portugal's most well-conserved historical structures dating back to the 9th Century. Constructed in 868 by Alfonso III of León as a military fortress, it has been the site of numerous attacks, invasions, revolts and has been used as palatial residence before being restored and designated as a National Monument in 1881. The castle, spread out magnificently over the Feira countryside, features several commemorative inscriptions that hark back to its crucial role in history. Apart from a central keep, the Tower of Menagem, and a tenalha or a passageway, there is also a small Baroque chapel on the castle's exterior wall.
