Fountain of the Idol

A revered artifact of the Roman era, the Fountain of the Idol has stood the test of time; a vestige of the rich mythology prescribed to by the people of this once formidable empire. Near the Palace of Raio in the historic city center of Braga, the Fountain of the Idol is an intriguing monument that dates back to the Roman era. The ancient fountain is believed to have been built in the 1st Century CE at the behest of Celico Fronto and bears Latin inscriptions that suggest its association with the Lusitanian gods, Tongoenabiagus and Nabia. Carved into the granite is a human figure alongside several illuminating inscriptions. This National Monument now lies enclosed within a modernist building that both protects the fountain and serves as an interpretation center.
