This location of the House of Fraser group was one of the 56 branches that the brand operated. Towering six floors above the city, the stylish department store beckoned shoppers with versatile products from distinctive brands. As of 2018, the brand has been taken over by Sports Direct.
Planned as a boulevard in the 19th century, the famous shopping street leads from the red court buildings to the New Street.
Marks and Spencer (M&S) is practically an institution in Britain. The appeal of the chain lies in its conservative approach combined with quality and value, although recently the chain has had difficulty keeping its core customers happy and clothes sales have slumped. This is a large store, with an excellent food hall and wine shop downstairs, and has tried hard in recent times to update its image. The 'autograph' range of designer clothing on the first floor is testament to this.
Smith's, although losing popularity in recent years, remains a mainstay of high street shopping life in Britain. It's a life-saver when it comes to buying last minute cards and presents and usually first port of call for students needing good, cheap stationery. Of course, it deals in much more besides. Smith's sells an excellent range of books, many at discounted prices, and is great for music as long as you're not after anything too obscure. Games, toys and puzzles, calendars, newspapers, magazines, and videos are also sold. The only problem with this store is that it may be a little too big, so it takes a while to get from one area to another, but that's hardly reason to forgo this national institution.
After a major refurbishment, this Waterstone's is now back and better than ever. It holds over 150,000 titles on its six floors, guarantees to find you any book in print and will try its best to get you any book which is not. The lifts now talk to you, there's a book garden, Coffee Republic has opened a small cafe on the first floor and the whole monster-sized building is lighter and airier than before. It seems this Waterstone's has regained its position as the best bookshop in Birmingham. Call +44 843 290 8149 for more information.
Schuh started life in Edinburgh in 1981 with the desire to provide individual high fashion footwear, sold in a unique and exciting retail environment. Ultra trendy brands such as Caterpillar, Kickers, Converse, Bronx and Vans can be found here. Their shoes tend to be club and high fashion, rather than sensible, work wear. The music is loud and the clientele young and beautiful. And if you don't find what you're after here, then there are plenty of other good shoe shops nearby on New Street.
