Austrian National Library

This structure was built by Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach between 1723 and 1735, according to a design by his father Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. Both names represent the highest quality in architecture and the Grand Hall of the National Library is said to be the most beautiful library room in the world. Don't miss visiting Grand Hall, with frescos by Daniel Gran and the historical Reading Room with frescos by Johann Bergl. The National Library's Museum of Globes is also open to the public. To imagine what imperial entertainment such as dances or masquerades were like, take a look into the ballrooms. Such imperial splendor be should enjoyed in a calm and relaxed mood.

Josefsplatz 1, Viena, Áustria, 1015
Heroes' Square

The Heldenplatz or Heroes' Square is noted worldwide as the site at which Hitler declared, in 1938, the annexation or Anschluss of Austria to the German Reich. Built during the reign of Emperor Francis Joseph, the plaza features the equestrian statues of heroic military figures - Prince Eugène of Savoy and Archduke Karl. Forming the outer plaza of the Hofburg, the sheer grandeur of the site makes for an excellent photo opp and even more after dark with the illuminated Neue Burg section. The square is often host to various cultural events and festivals throughout the year. From Heldenplatz, access two of Vienna's finest city parks - the Volksgarten and the Burggarten as well.

Karlsplatz Stadtbahn Station

An erstwhile station of the stadtbahn railway type, Karlsplatz Stadtbahn Station is a sort of architectural and historical monument in the city. The place was designed and developed by Otto Wanger during the early ears and underwent many changes throughout its lifespan. Made out of marble blocks and steel beams, the gate of this station remains one of its most astounding features. Today, many buildings have developed near the station and have maintained the sanctity of this architectural marvel.

Parlament

The Baroque Palace was built around the late 17th Century for a count. Once the count died, his widow sold it to the Schonborn family. The castle houses fine works of art from some of Europe's most influential artists, though many in the collection were sold in the 18th Century. The highlight is of course the garden and the famous tulips within.

Laudongasse 15, Viena, Áustria, 1080
Gasometer Simmering

Erected in 1896-1899, the four huge gas tanks were then the first municipal gasworks of this size on the European continent. 1,630 workers a day had to do some very hard work to build these, their architectural and technical standards being the most progressive for gas holders at that time. These monuments of urban industrialization, 70m high each, can be seen from very far away. The gasometers were fully active until 1985. Since then the buildings were transformed into apartments.

Guglgasse 6, Viena, Áustria, 1110
Danube Tower

When viewed from afar, the Danube Tower might appear to the untrained eye more like an odd over sized lighthouse in which one would not suspect in a 1000 years contains a restaurant with a stunning panoramic view. Guests are delivered in a matter of seconds (30 actually) to either the viewing terrace at 150 meters (492.12 feet) from water level; or the restaurant. It is only after a short while that most guests realize that the entire room of the restaurant is, in fact, rotating. Signs are programmed to point out all the sights as and when they appear. A tip for visitors: any sunset observed from this point is not soon forgotten.

Donauturmstrasse 4, Viena, Áustria, 1210
Karl-Marx-Hof (Karl Marx Courtyard)

When the Social Democrats came into power at the beginning of the 1920s, they started a social project to construct more buildings in the hope of improving the bad living conditions in crowded Vienna. The Karl-Marx-Hof is an impressive example: more than 1km long, with pinnacles and thick walls for the balconies, it looks like a fortress. At one time it really was a fortress: in 1934, on February 12th, the building was bombarded with cannons. The revolution called for by the Social Democrats, who hid themselves in the Karl-Marx-Hof and tried in vain to prevent the elimination of the democratic institutions in Austria, was quashed.

Februar Platz 12, Viena, Áustria, 1190
Zentralfriedhof

Zentralfriedhof is one of the largest cemeteries in Europe. The enormous burial ground spans across 2.4 square kilometers (590 acres) of southern Vienna and is the final resting space for over 3 million people. Designed in 1870 by celebrated landscapers Karl Jonas Mylius and Alfred Friedrich Bluntschli, the graveyard unites all religions in death with exclusive areas for Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim and Catholic burials. Eminent national personalities like Johannes Brahms, Hans Moser and Beethoven are remembered by towering gravestones and splendid sculptures that punctuate the picturesque scenery. The majestic Art Nouveau church of Karl Lueger is the centerpiece of the graveyard and paints a sombre and serene picture.
