The river Lagan used to be a muddy waterway meandering slowly out to sea. Recently, however, the river has been dredged, cleaned and generally spruced up to such an extent that wildlife has returned to its banks and humans to its waters. The Lagan Watersports Centre is where you can enjoy the restored glories of the river at close range, so if you've ever fancied having a go at driving a powerboat, James Bond style, here is your chance. Sailing, rowing and canoeing are available or you can climb into a Chinese dragon boat. For the less adventurous, there is a picnic area where you can eat while watching more intrepid souls splashing around in the river Lagan.
Ever wanted to witness what lay beneath the surface of the waters of the vast blue ocean? Then join the Dive Belfast Sub-Aqua Club and let your wish come true. One of the oldest in Northern Ireland, this club was established in 1956, and welcomes both novices to the sport as well as experienced divers to hone their skills. Led by a team of professionals, if you are new to diving your initial sessions will be in a dive pool and then you can proceed to open waters. You will attain your BSAC Ocean Diver, the minimal diving qualification, on the completion of this course. Check the website for further information.
Belfast Boat Club is a hub of activity on the waterfront and offers plenty of opportunities for recreation and sports. Tennis, squash, rowing and fitness activities can be engaged in here.
