Este é um dos mais antigos teatros em Roma. Foi construído em 1732 pelo arquitecto Theoldi encomendado pela família Sforza Cesarini e desde então foi restaurado várias vezes ao longo dos anos. Tornou-se a sede da companhia de Teatro Sabile de Roma em 1994, atualmente dirigida por Mario Martone. Através da colaboração de diversas companhias italianas, bem como por conta das interessantes possibilidades técnicas oferecidas pelo palco, o programa é bastante variado, com algumas produções grandiosas. Iniciativas culturais, tais como conferências, debates e da leitura de textos clássicos, muitas vezes ocorrem em seu vestíbulo durante os meses de inverno.
Fundada no final do século 19 pelo empresário Costanzi, este teatro foi considerado por muito tempo como um dos mais prestigiados teatros de ópera da Europa.
