Situated in an eastern neighborhood of Stuttgart, Weinmanufaktur Untertürkheim is an award-wining winery dating back to 1887. It is a cooperative composed of 40 growers and boasts several hectares of vineyards close to River Neckar. It has won almost 50 awards for being the best cooperative winery in the country, and also for individual wines and prominent estate managers. Through tasting events, champagne receptions and cellar tours, you can sample their specialty wines made from grape varieties like Pinot Meunier, Cabernet Franc, Blaufränkisch and Pinot Gris. This winery frequently hosts events like wine appreciation classes, cigar and wine pairing, and live music nights in genres such as rockabilly. It also serves as a meeting place for like-minded oenophiles.
Stuttgart is one of the rare German cities to have vineyards within the city limits. Among its famous wineries, the family-owned Weingut Zaiß stands out because it has been involved in wine-making since more than 400 years. 11 generations of the family have participated in the winery’s operations, each passing on age-old wisdom and fermentation techniques to their successors. Typically, it ferments local grapes of Baden-Württemberg to prepare a range of sparkling, red and white wines. This winery is best known for the in-house wine bar Sonnen-Besen, where diners can pair luxury wines with traditional Swabian dishes. Weingut Diehl is situated in the outskirts of Stuttgart, in the eastern part of the city. It is a charming winery surrounded by 6.5 hectares (16 acres) of lush green vineyards growing grapes like Muscatel, Trollinger, Pinot Regent, Müller-Thurgau and Merlot. 72 percent of the vineyards are reserved for red grape cultivation and only 25 percent for white grapes. Started in 1972, it is relatively new compared to Stuttgart’s historic wineries. Today, Weingut Diehl is managed by two brothers Rainer and Werner Diehl, the third generation of the founding family. The highlight of the winery is the alfresco dining space where you can sample their boutique wines and enjoy a panoramic view of the vineyards at the same time. The best time to sample wines and enjoy the view is during sunset. The in-house wine shop is open only on Fridays and Saturdays.
Kessler Sekt dates back to the 1820s and is Germany’s oldest winery producing sparkling wine. It has won several awards at prestigious international wine festivals and exhibitions in France and the United States. Founder Georg Christian Kessler learnt the methods of making champagne in Reims, France and brought this knowledge to Germany. Thereafter, it has continually produced sparkling wines that draw inspiration from champagne, yet maintain their own characteristic aromas and flavors. The one and a half hour guided tour of the winery takes you through vintage wine cellars with medieval vaults and thick stone walls. Over the centuries, numerous royal houses, film stars and other celebrities have visited this wine cellar and enjoyed the luxury wines. Besides Kessler sparkling wines, you can sample specialty wine cocktails at the cellar. This winery also has separate spaces for hosting lavish corporate and social events.
Weinstadt means “Wine City,” and the town is one of the best wine regions in Germany. Remstalkellerei is its most famous winery and the 10th largest one in the country. It is actually a cooperative of local wine producers who collectively own 585 hectares (1445.6 acres) of vineyards. More than 1000 tenants help in the farming and grape fermentation process. The vineyards are located at a greater height than most grape plantations in the state and, hence, its grapes have a distinct flavor, not found elsewhere. It is especially popular for Pinot Meunier, Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt grapes among others. The winery produces and sells a range of rosé, red and white wines, dessert and sparkling wines, as well as vinegar and jelly. It also frequently hosts wine tasting events and sets up temporary markets to sell wine and chocolate.
