Tokyo International Forum is an excellent venue for music, theater, dance performances, cinema and art exhibitions. It consists of four buildings, each with its own venue hall. Live performances are usually staged in Hall A and Hall B. The facilities are marvelous and include a variety of restaurants that cater to a wide range of culinary tastes. Concerts are also sometimes staged in the afternoon and evening.

Kabuki-za, the main kabuki theater in Tokyo since 1889, usually features two daily performances each consisting of three or four plays, and the repertoire is changed monthly. For 650 Yen, non-Japanese-speaking visitors can hire earphones that give an explanation in English. The visitor who does not have time for an entire performance can buy a ticket for the 4th floor to watch part of the show, but earphones are not available. Five restaurants provide a wide range of Japanese food and refreshments for visitors.

The National Theater is the oldest and best theater for traditional Japanese dance. There are two theaters: one with a seating capacity of 1654 in which kabuki is staged for about eight months of the year, and the other with a capacity of 594 in which Bunraku, an elaborate form of a puppet show, is performed. Earphone guides and an explanation of the story are available. A restaurant on-site serves Japanese food as well as alcohol, soft drinks, tea and coffee. Ticket prices vary according to performance.

One of the most well-known live houses in Tokyo, Moon Romantic provides patrons with a nightly opportunity to fall in love with music all over again. From acoustic music to various other genres like soul, this place delivers quality that is matched by few. A common venue for music launches, Moon Romantic can be described as a toned-down version of some of the more upscale Tokyo nightclubs, minus the dance floor. Nevertheless, you can always come down for an entertainment packed evening that includes a plethora of cultural activities, such as poetry, book readings, plays or live painting. All in all, totally worth a visit.

Visitors to the National Noh Theater can see traditional kyogen as well as noh dramas. There are performances about 16 days out of the month, and the repertoire changes about four or five times. Because the singing of these esoteric art forms can be difficult to understand (even for those who speak Japanese fluently) theater-goers are provided with a one-page explanation of the story in English. To really appreciate Noh, it is advisable to read a little about it before going. The theater itself has a seating capacity of 591, and there is a restaurant that seats 104 and serves light refreshments at reasonable prices on-site. The theater is closed on Mondays.

Mainly aimed towards the musically inclined in Tokyo, this venue might not be terribly big in size but for what it lacks in space it makes up for in consistency of great bands, gigs, excellent sound quality and a lively crowd. O-Nest is a multi-level venue, split up into two levels which require you to use a fire escape.

The New National Theater, a strikingly modern house of culture and performance, consists of the Opera House, the Playhouse and the Pit. The Opera House features ballet and opera and has a capacity of 1810. The Playhouse, with a capacity of about 1000, stages drama, modern dance, small operas, ballets and musicals. The Pit, which seats 400 to 450, features a movable floor that can be used both as a stage and audience seating, and stages diverse contemporary productions such as experimental theater and modern dance. There is a full-service restaurant and buffet on-site for grabbing a bite before a performance.
