Fun for everyone. Durban's only amusement park, situated on the Marine Parade. It is a wonderland of family fun and fantasy, offering breathtaking rides on an aerial cable way, tilt n whirl, dogems and the hair-raising swing-boat, to mention just a few. There are also plenty of rides for the little ones, such as the bumper cars, a carousel and kiddy-rides. There are plenty of thrilling adult rides for the adrenaline junkies too! Of course, this is no Disneyland, and children who are used to a larger scale park may be disappointed. Rides are moderately priced, but costs can add up. Funworld is open daily 11 am onwards.
The park is located near the city centre in the Bulwer area and is readily accessible from King George V Road. This small park is distinguished as a natural heritage site because it contains many indigenous trees, including the Natal Elm, and preserves something of the original coastal environment. The bird life is good too, as you would expect in an indigenous environment. A 500m trail runs on either side of the valley. Beware of biting insects, especially in the summer.
This museum is on the corner of West and Aliwal, behind the city hall. It has various galleries taking a look back at 'how things were' in the early days of Natal - costumes, buildings, and interactive displays. It also provides an illustration of Zululand and its history. The model of a Zulu warrior is particularly striking. The museum is housed in the building of the old courthouse (1863) and has been declared a National Monument. The shop has an interesting range of old photos.
Most of the popular bathing beaches in Kwazulu-Natal are protected by shark nets maintained by the KZN Sharks Board. Each day, crews on ski boats check the nets and collect any snared sharks. These are brought back to the institute, dissected and studied. There are regular one-hour tours which include a peek into the enormous freezer where the shark carcasses are stored, a shark dissection, and a fascinating audiovisual presentation. There is an interesting curio shop offering sharkskin leather goods and sharks teeth. Boat tours may also be arranged (USD 15). Some of these exhibits are not for the faint-hearted.
